The real reason why Nintendo doesn’t like the Smash community is that they know that the community’s behavior will kill the company’s reputation. As a matter of fact, I’m under the impression that these Smash fanboys are INTENTIONALLY trying to drive Nintendo’s reputation into the ground since a lot of them only like Nintendo because of the Smash Bros. games (yet they are very hateful towards Nintendo staff, particularly Masahiro Sakurai). Think about it, members of the Smash community engage in rather toxic behavior (i.e. they call each other really offensive words such as homophobic slurs, among other things) and they hurt others who don’t deserve to be hurt (who could forget the sexual abuse allegations from back in the summer?). Because of this toxic behavior, if Nintendo decided to affiliate with this community, it could harm future sales of games and their reputation since, say, little Timmy’s parents may not want to buy their child a game that’s been associated with horrible and disgusting behaviors. I really want to reason with people that what Nintendo’s doing is really smart, even if it garners negative attention from the Smash fanboys, the same people who are just so terrible to be around.
To put it simply, Nintendo should keep doing what they’re doing since their public image is really really important so that their target demographic, kids, could continue buying their products.
