The Game Boy line of handheld video game systems and software titles was produced by Nintendo from July 31, 1989 until October 5, 2007. There were three different generations: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, with each generation having its own library of games and selection of models.
- Game Boy, released on July 31, 1989. It was an 8-bit system, and had a screen that could only display four shades of green and had no light, making it hard to play in the dark. It had a d-pad, A & B buttons, and start & select buttons, and was oriented in a portrait design. It was powered by four AA batteries. This model was discontinued by August 1996.
- Game Boy Pocket, released on July 21, 1996. It featured a slimmer design made to fit better into your pocket, hence its name. It had a screen that could display four shades of black and white, and was powered by two AAA batteries. This model was discontinued by November 1999.
- Game Boy Color, released on November 18, 1998. It had a full-color screen and more powerful hardware specs, allowing for much more impressive graphics and gameplay It introduced its own library of games that only work on it, but it could also play older Game Boy titles. It was powered by two AA batteries. This model was discontinued by December 2002.
- Game Boy Advance, released on June 11, 2001. It was a 32-bit system that had even more powerful hardware specs, allowing for much more impressive graphics and gameplay. It added L & R buttons and was oriented in a landscape design. It introduced its own library of games that only work on it, but it could also play older Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles. This model was discontinued by April 2003.
- Game Boy Advance SP, released on March 23, 2003. It featured a rechargeable battery, a frontlit screen, and a clamshell design similar to a flip phone. Systems purchased from September 19, 2005 onwards have a backlit screen. This model was discontinued by November 2007.
- Game Boy Micro, released on September 19, 2005. It featured a backlit screen, and a very small design in a landscape orientation. It was only able to play Game Boy Advance titles, and didn't work with older Game Boy or Game Boy Color titles. This model was discontinued by November 2007.
