Current Switch owner, but looking to play past Pokemon games - where do I start?

I haven't played the games since Y/R/B, and I recently got through Sword and Shield. I had a fantastic experience, but I've seen SO much criticism saying the current series is nothing what it used to be. I see so much praise for Black/White and other series - which left me wondering how I can experience these games now in 2021. I'm 31 years old and I feel like I missed a huge part of Pokemon where a lot of people got the most enjoyment.

So, what do you recommend and what's the best/most economically friendly way to play these games? I don't want to emulate, so I don't mind buying a 3DS if I have to. It just really irritates me that that Switch doesn't do anything regarding virtual console or allowing us access to these legacy games. I want to experience the games everyone else did these last 10 years or so.

Thanks in advance!
