No I'm not talking about competitive as in ranked I'm just talking about viability. 9/10 Nintendo games when you play online are just straight up crap. And the worst part is that the it wouldn't be crap if you didn't have 350ms response times and constant lagging/freezing. Like Nintendo has so much potential to really make a scene in online gaming and they just waste it.
Let's start with Smash. Fantastic game. Tons of characters and tons of different ways to use each one. Could be a real good online fighting game. But ope here's the kicker, a game supported in 2020 STILL DOESN'T HAVE A VIABLE MATCHMAKING SYSTEM! Seriously Nintendo get a grip. This is what the players want! And indie fighting game like brawlhallah can support 4 player fighting matches just fine but multi billion dollar conglomerate Nintendo can't make a good online platform for one of its most popular games? Pathetic. Utterly and absolutely embarrassing. It can't be that hard when literally every single other online game today can get it right. But no, I have to deal with 400ms response times and stuttery online matches on one of my favorite single player games. Totally ruins the experience. You can sit for hours playing that game online locally because IT'S SO FUN! But you ruin online play for it and I refuse to deal with the online connectivity issues.
Then you got Super Mario maker 2. It's a hit or miss. I've had some really fun games with no connection issues at all and I've had ones so bad that it just made me turn off my switch and go back to my PC. Like seriously a 4 person platformer is so hard to netcode? Give me a break
Then you have games like Mario Kart THAT ACTUALLY WORKS! And God let me tell you Mariokart is not my go to Nintendo game but it's my go to online game on the switch. Why? Because it always works. I mean I play that game for hours and the worst that happens is MAYBE a single match disconnect. I mean Mario Kart has a near flawless online experience. I don't get it you can get this game right which has arguably a more complex network environment than SMM2 (I wouldn't say more complex than smash tho but still inexcusable) but you can't even get a platformer right!?
These are the 3 main online Nintendo games I own so I can't speak for the others but considering these games are also the most selling Nintendo games I find my argument valid. There are games I'd actually like to try from Nintendo but shy away from due to fear that the online simply just isn't viable.
Nintendo seriously what are you doing? And people what are you doing praising Nintendo about all their great games but aren't holding them accountable for building a quality online experience? It's 2020. Single player games are great and Nintendo is one of the few companies that still gets them right but you have to appeal to both sides. I'm not going to try and fixate and make this about one game as I know the online issues run across mostly all their games but Smash online man... That game is built to thrive in an online environment. It's great you build a quality single player experience for it but that doesn't excuse your absolute pitiful online implementation. Nintendo you got the money and you got the experience in the industry and not offering a quality online experience for a game that should have one is unforgivable. Whatever the next system that releases I will be giving a hard pass on until I see Nintendo games are offering a good online experience.
I don't know if this is the right sub to place this or if it will get removed for being too critical but I hope whoever reads this from nintendo takes some notes instead of just taking the post down because they don't like angry customers. This is a serious issue and deserves more attention than what people give it
