Why do people like Super Mario Sunshine?

Not trying to be antagonistic or negative here, I just genuinely want to understand. While it seems to receive a lot of jabs online, people also generally seem to remember it fondly. I’m working through the game for my first time via 3D All-Stars and was driven to post this after a series of ragequits. The game started off strong, but it feels like most areas have one mission that just absolutely blows. I’d been skipping these levels with the thought that, like the other 3D Mario’s, only a certain number of shines would be required. I hit 60 shines today, thinking that I could access the end, but nope. I am going to be forced to go through a series of all of my least favorite, most unplayable levels before I can finish, and I honestly just kind of don’t feel like finishing the game. The remaining levels don’t just feel hard, they feel completely bogged down by bugs and an awful camera and just general bull crap. I normally adore all things Mario, so this is a weird feeling for me. So, those of you who are fans of this game: why? Is it worth pushing through and getting all the shines? Is it even worth finishing?
