Hi Nintendo-Fans,
we've all been scratching our heads lately over these weird limited releases.
I've watched RGT's video on the topic, and I had a mind-blowing idea:
Nintendo Virtual Collection.
The VC would be Nintendo's Game Pass, a premium service with a collection of Nintendo games for a fee higher than NSO. The name would be a marketing move to pander to Nintendo's former beloved service.
How it would work:
Think of VC like a movie's release chain.
1- Theatrical Release, 2- VOD, 3- Home Video/ Streaming
It would be similar here, just inverting physical-digital:
1- Limited Physical Release (Ltd. digital for smaller games), 2- Virtual Collection, 3- NSO
NSO 2021 (Not so valuable legacy content): NES, SNES + GB/GBC.
VC 2021 will feature all previously limited releases, Mario 64, Galaxy, Sunshine and 35, Fire Emblem, and more smaller games from N64-Wii, GBA-3DS, that are """"not worth""""" physical re-releases, like some Mario spin-offs, some older Smashs, some Kirbies and stuff.
Even Switch games outside the Top 15-20 could "go Virtual", like Kirby Star Allies, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Xenoblade Chronicles or games with dead online like Mario Maker 2 in 2021 maybe, to reignite it. Maybe even really small new games, I don't see all of Nintendo's new first party games "going Virtual", since other than Microsoft, Nintendo lives from 1st party, not thirds.
Smaller third parties, specially Indies could also be added, and even bigger third party oldies for a very short time, like 2D Dragon Quests and FFs, older Street Fighters, Rezident Evils.
The content would be rotated, excluding Nintendo's big first parties, which would stay there forever until they "go NSO".
In 2021, Zelda, Metroid and Pokémon will all receive limited Anniversary collections, which will "go virtual" in late 2021/ early 2022.
NO more platforms would be added to NSO on the Switch's lifespan, or at least not in the first 1-2 years of VC.
With the pass of the years, on Nintendo's next-gen plaftorm, that's when it's more likely for N64, GBA, maybe even Gamecube and DS to "go NSO".
This would make Nintendo a lot more monthly revenue, and solve the problem of adding "too much value" to the cheap NSO.
However, to keep things simple, they would not clearly explain this chain-system to us, they would just describe VC as "a premium virtual collection of Nintendo games". They don't want people to wait for games to go NSO, they will pay to play those games now, but they will still need NSO for playing online, so Nintendo could make a bundle like Microsoft's Game Pass Ultimate. If Microsoft can, why can't Nintendo?
What do you think?
Admittedly, I would probably not subscribe to this myself, I would prefer to buy the physical releases, but I'm suuuuure a loooooot of people would.
Specially if you could play Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Windwaker, Metroid Prime, Pokémon FireRed/ LeafGreen, Ruby/ Sapphire/ Emerald, all on your Virtual Collection.
